Is it normal to feel grief after a pet dies?

I got my dog as a gift back when I was 7 years old in 1997. He died last night in my bed while I was sleeping. All day, I've had this huge painful lump feeling in my throat and tears won't stop coming down from my eyes and it's hard to breath normally. Thankfully, I haven't broken down and started sobbing because I don't want to have to put up with my parents and their condescending fake @ss sympathy. I don't want anybody to hear me cry and I'm hoping they'll have the grace to go out and do something away from the house like I asked them to.
